We are looking for a Head of English department for an International High School based in Shanghai. This is a full-time position starting in August 2024.

 

About the school

The International High School situated in Songjiang, Shanghai focuses on giving its pupils a broad international curriculum, comprising IGCSE, A Level, IB, and AP, to prepare them to succeed in universities throughout the world. The independent campus of the school is equipped with a variety of facilities, such as an internal and external basketball court, race track, laboratories, libraries, Chinese and Western eateries, and other hardware amenities, offering plenty of space, serenity, and beauty for learning.

 

About the role

We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Head of English to lead our English department. The successful candidate will be responsible for overseeing the English curriculum, fostering an engaging learning environment, and driving excellence in English teaching and learning across all grades.

  • Lead the planning, development, and implementation of a comprehensive English curriculum that meets the needs of all students
  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of teaching, learning, and assessment methods within the English department
  • Mentor and support English teachers, facilitating professional development and encouraging innovative teaching practices
  • Manage departmental resources effectively, ensuring materials and equipment are available and used efficiently
  • Collaborate with other department heads and senior management to align the English department’s objectives with the overall educational goals of the institution
  • Engage with students, parents, and staff to promote the importance of English literature and language
  • Organize and oversee extracurricular activities related to English, such as reading clubs, writing workshops, and literary competitions
  • Analyze student performance data to identify areas for improvement and implement strategies to address educational gaps
  • Prepare and manage the department’s budget, ensuring resources are allocated effectively to support teaching and learning objectives
  • Stay abreast of developments in English education, curriculum standards, and best practices

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor degree in English, Education, or a related field
  • Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent
  • Extensive experience teaching English in an international secondary school environment
  • Proven leadership experience in an educational setting, preferably within an English department
  • Strong understanding of curriculum development, teaching strategies, and educational assessment
